Myrtle W. Figueras Scholarship
For Gainesville High School graduating seniors 

A native of Thomasville (GA), Myrtle W. Figueras taught French at E.E. Butler High and Gainesville High for thirty years. A mother and grandmother, she enjoys quality time with her family and is a tireless worker for her beloved church, St. John Baptist. After her retirement from teaching, she sought public office and was elected to the City Council of Gainesville in 1996 and her service continues today. She served as Mayor of the city in 2001-2002, becoming the first African-American female Mayor in the city's history. This scholarship was created by friends to sustain her name and her legacy.
